Improved life expectancy for Indigenous and non‐Indigenous people in the Northern Territory, 1999–2018: overall and by underlying cause of death

Description

Life expectancy at birth, an important summary measure of population health, varies considerably in Australia by state and territory and by age population. According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics life tables (2018–2020), life expectancy at birth is lowest in the Northern Territory: 76.2 years for men (Australia: 81.2 years), 81.0 years for women (Australia: 85.3 years). On the other hand, life expectancy gains between 2008–2010 and 2018–2020 were greatest in the NT: 2.2 years for men (Australia: 1.7 years), 1.8 years for women (Australia: 1.3 years).
